Located on the edge of Yucatán peninsula you’ll find the small boho town of Tulum. Get ready to enjoy the pristine white sand beaches right at the Caribbean Sea, explore the rich Mayan history and shop in lovely boutiques. It’s the perfect place to spend your vacation and recharge. Here are the top things to do during your trip in Tulum:
Tulum Ruins:
Explore the ancient Tulum Ruins in Mexico: Perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, these well-preserved Mayan ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into history and breathtaking ocean views. There is no direct sign pointing to the ticket office so it’s quite difficult to find. Once you get there, there are two different fees: one for the national reserve (around 4USD) and the entrance fee to see the ruins (5USD). You can explore the ruins on your own or hire a local guide to tell you everything about the history of mayans in the area. Either way it is a beautiful experience.
Rent bikes, go boutique shopping and explore Tulum Beach:
The best way to explore the area around Tulum beach is by renting a bicycle. It’s the perfect way to get around and see all the beautiful shops and boutiques along the main road. Take your time and make a few stops to shop at unique boutiques, eat an açaí bowl or a few tacos and take pictures and take pictures at countless photo-worthy spots.
Photospot Escultura „Ven a la luz“:
If you search „Tulum“ anywhere online one of the first pictures you’ll see is people posing in front of Escultura „ven a la luz“. It’s located on the main road alongside Tulum beach. You need a ticket to enter the small area with all different kinds of sculptures and photo backgrounds. The entrance fee is usually around 4€ and is paid directly at the entrance.
Visit Tulum downtown:
Discover the charm of downtown Tulum: Wander through vibrant streets filled with local boutiques to find souvenirs, cozy cafes, and authentic Mexican cuisine. Enjoy a blend of bohemian vibes and rich culture, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.
Enjoy the Beach:
One of the main reasons why people visit the small town of Tulum is its perfect beaches. Located right at the Caribbean sea you’ll find a place like paradise. Take your time and enjoy breathtaking white-sand beaches and the warm ocean. My personal favorite is the beach right in front of the Selina Hostel.
Visit A cenote:
Visiting a Cenote in Tulum is a must for any nature enthusiast or adventure seeker. These freshwater sinkholes, formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, offer crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Each cenote has its own unique charm, from the open-air beauty of Gran Cenote to the secluded and lush Cenotes. Exploring these natural wonders provides a refreshing escape from the tropical heat and a glimpse into the ancient Mayan world, as cenotes were considered sacred by the Mayans and used for both ritual and daily purposes.
How to get To Tulum:
The nearest airport to fly into is Cancun airport. After you got through customs and picked up your bags it’s time to head out and start your adventure. Tulum is located 2 hours south of Cancun sight at the Caribbean Sea. There are different ways to get to Tulum depending on your budget. The cheapest option is the ADO bus. You can book the ticket up front using the ADO App. After 2,5 hours you’ll arrive in downtown Tulum. Another option is booking a private shuttle from Cancun airport directly to your accommodation. This is with around 100€ definitely the pricier option.
In Tulum you can get around using general taxis or Uber. Keep in mind that Tulum is quite expensive because of the tourism. This is also noticeable if you look at taxi prices. If you want a cheaper version there are the local collectivo busses.
What’s the best time to visit Tulum:
The best time to visit Tulum is during November and December since the weather is perfect it’s not too crowded as in late winter or early spring. Peak season is from November to April. This is also the time where you get the best chances of enjoying the seaweed free beaches.
The months from may to September are usually rain season in Tulum and because of that way less crowded. But if you are looking for a cheaper time to visit this might be the perfect opportunity.
Where to stay in Tulum:
Tulum has options for everyone. Depending on the purpose of your trip and your type of travel you can choose if you’d rather stay at a quiet hotel at the beach and enjoy paradise right outside your door or if you’d prefer a budget accommodation in downtown Tulum with its restaurants, shops and nightlife right there to explore.
